FBI recommends Internet users to reset routers

The FBI recently issued a warning to people around the country - reset your Internet router to avoid malware from foreign hackers.

The recommendation was made on Friday after Cisco Systems reported that software called VPNFilter compromised hundreds of thousands of common internet routers that are typically used in homes. The FBI believes that the malware is linked to hackers in Russia. It's recommended that Internet users reboot their routers and update the firmware to prevent the hack from going further.

Mike O'Connor with WCOIL says that this is something to take seriously because anyone could be affected by it.

"Don't feel like 'It's not going to affect me, I'm in Lima, Ohio,' it doesn't matter where you are - it's just that these computers are out searching the Internet, and if they find one of these particular routers, they're going to go into it," said O'Connor, president of WCOIL. "Take it seriously and prevent any potential problems down the road."

O'Connor also says that the company that manages your Internet should have a full list of steps of what you need to do to reset your router.
