FORT JENNINGS, OH (WLIO) - Students at Fort Jennings worked with their hands this Earth Day.

Students from grades 6 through 12 spent the last few hours of the school day learning about the history and meaning of Earth Day. The idea behind the afternoon is to teach students why the Earth needs to be taken care of for future generations and how they can contribute. There were plenty of eco-friendly hands-on activities and crafts, and several classes got to work outside and enjoy the weather.

Many students in the district already spend a lot of time outside, so teachers hope they will continue to use what they learned today about taking care of the environment and the outdoors.

"We have some kids mulching as you've probably seen, and some are building birdhouses and painting birdhouses, or making like flowers and stuff to give out. And we also had a clothing drive that kids all week donated clothes for that will be donated around," said Ian Howbert, a junior at Fort Jennings High School.

"We just all have to work together to take care of the environment, it's not something that just one person can do all over the world. But if everyone does their part, and we all make a small difference, in the end it'll make a big difference," commented Braden Knippen, a junior at Fort Jennings High School.

"They do enjoy meeting with Mother Nature, doing everything from chores at home to just being outside and enjoying the fresh air of a rural area. And I think they're getting a real awareness that this can be fun too," stated Jeff Jostpille, a science teacher at Fort Jennings High School.

The students and staff also wanted to make sure their campus looked its best for graduation.
