PUTNAM COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - The Putnam County Council on Aging is feeding local seniors. This year, the Healthy Aging Grant gave the council funding to hold several free grab-and-go meal distributions across the county.
It's important to help seniors get something healthy to eat, but the distribution is also about helping them feel less isolated.
Seniors often have difficulty cooking, finding meals to cook for just one person, or even just affording groceries on limited incomes. It's important to help seniors get something healthy to eat, but the distribution is also about helping them feel less isolated.
"They really appreciate it. We even get phone calls at the office afterward saying how good the meal was, or it was wonderful to be able to have a meal out. Some of them will get together; they'll come and pick up their meals, and then they'll socialize at somebody's house. So that's a great thing too," said Mary Maas, community outreach coordinator for the Putnam County Council on Aging.

Seniors usually, a lot of times, especially if they live by themselves or at home, don't feel like they have a reason to come out and about," added Tammy Schroeder, the council's activity coordinator. "Just knowing that we are making a difference. Maybe making somebody's day with a kind word and a smile and maybe make them laugh, a free meal," said Tammy Schroeder, activity coordinator at the Putnam County Council on Aging.
