LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Students at Lima’s South Science and Technology Magnet School teamed up to create a sweet holiday tradition ahead of winter break.

Eighth-grade and kindergarten students worked side by side to build gingerbread houses as part of the school’s mentorship program. The students are paired together for the school year and meet several times, forming relationships that go beyond the classroom.

On Thursday, the mentor pairs gathered to design and decorate gingerbread houses, giving both age groups a chance to be creative and enjoy time together before the holiday break.

“Well, it's basically like a buddy's program where us eighth graders, we go down to the kindergarten room, and we sort of like make designs with the kids, and we like to spend time with them, so then they're just not stuck in class all day, so they can just have some fun,” said Matthew Askins, an eighth-grade student.

Kindergarten students also shared their excitement about the activity and the decorations they added to their gingerbread houses.

“We had to put the graham crackers on each side. And then when we were done we put a lot of details. But how we did a house that's when we added a door handle. And the marshmallow is a chimney and I just added a lot of lights,” said kindergarten student Harrison Graham.

Another student, Damion Ey, said his house included sprinkles, graham crackers and marshmallows.

The gingerbread house activity marked one of the final gatherings for the mentorship program before winter break. Students’ last day of school is Friday, and they will return after the first of the year to continue the program.
