Around 600 meals will be served for people to either take home or stay and eat at the Rockford Community Center.

Three churches around Rockford work together to put on the annual Christmas community meal. Around 600 meals will be served for people to either take home or stay and eat at the Rockford Community Center. The meal started as a way to help people who may not have a place to go on Christmas, but it has grown into an annual tradition for families to not only gather and eat but to volunteer on the holiday.

“We have had some where their kids have come from Columbus and that, and they come up here for lunch. And they have made it their own. The servers their Christmas has changed. I just talked to someone a little while ago. Yeah, we were here last year, and the kids were not too thrilled last year, but at the end of the day, we can do this again next year. And we get plenty of volunteers that show up, and not just from Rockford. We have had them come from St. Henry, Van Wert, Indiana. So, people hear about it, and they just want to help,” says Casey Nuttle, Together on Christmas Dinner.

The community meal not only celebrates the birth of Christ but also the feeling of family and fellowship during the holiday.

“It is exciting to be together and to be unified in the body of Christ. Kind of a neat thing in this current world that we are in. Instead of division and strife, there is unity over a plate of food,” says Pastor Bill Halter, Rockford United Methodist Church.

The Together on Christmas community meal has been going on for 19 years now.
