LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A Lima City Councilman and the Lima chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority are teaming up to educate the community on how to act during a traffic stop.

6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn is distributing cards, printed by the sorority, to different locations that provide step-by-step instructions for what to do if pulled over. Some of the seven recommendations include answering questions without an attitude, following all requests and keeping hands visible on the steering wheel.

Information cards help Lima residents navigate police encounters

This is the second year of the project. Last year, about 300 cards were distributed, and organizers hope to double that number this year. The goal is to help deescalate situations rather than make them worse.

“We got a lot of young police officers too, when I changed over the guards over the years. And would like for you to be able to, you know, knowing the proper procedure, what you need to do. You know when a police officer stopped your car, or have you sequestered? And these are the ones you go by. You know, strictly, don't get out your car. Some people didn't know that,” said Derry Glenn, Lima’s 6th Ward Councilman.

Glenn said the cards will be available at libraries this week. Anyone interested in receiving one can also contact him at (419) 905-9572.
