Lawyers for a teenager accused of killing Vera Jo Reigle say police violated her rights. Attorneys for 17 year old Nicole Peters are questioning whether or not her interview with police regarding Reigle, should be allowed for her trial, because they say detectives violated her rights.
According to a motion filed in the Hancock County Clerk of Courts Office by Peters Attorney Christopher Travis, detectives didn't inform Peters of her Miranda Rights until nearly 30 minutes after having her behind closed doors. The motion does state that detectives initially told Peters she was free to go, but later told her she had to stay after discovering Peters was a runaway. It also claims detectives tried to fool Peters by describing Reigle as missing when they already knew she was dead. The attorney also says, Peters expressed confusion when read her rights which she then waived.
Judge Reginald Routson will rule on the matter at a future date. Peters is charged with aggravated murder, two counts of kidnapping and tempering with evidence.
