LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Members of the Lima community will come together to honor the life and legacy of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

A remembrance ceremony will be held Sunday, March 1, at Providence Missionary Baptist Church, allowing area residents to pay tribute to Jackson’s contributions to the United States and the world.

Jackson became a leader in the civil rights movement, following in the footsteps of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the late Congressman John Lewis.

He visited Lima in 2008 following the police shooting that killed Tarika Wilson and injured her 1-year-old son. Local leaders say he made a lasting impression during that visit and continue striving to uphold the ideals he shared.

“But we want to make sure we do a good memorial service for him. They know we appreciate when he came down here to lime a while and talk with us some of the things that he talked with I'm still working on in our community. I was a city councilman and Pastor Tommy Pitts and me both met with him and discussed some of the things that we need to do in our community, and a lot of things he discussed with me. I'm working in my ward right now with it, and I appreciate him so much,” says Derry Glenn, Lima’s 6th Ward Councilman.

The remembrance ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 2495 N. Cole St., Lima.
