VERSAILLES, Ohio (WLIO) - The bird flu has hit Ohio hard, and state officials are meeting with media to talk about the issue.

Governor Mike DeWine and the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture held a press conference Thursday afternoon in Darke County to discuss the impact in the state. Ohio ranks second in the country in egg production, and eighth in turkey production, and western Ohio is a major contributor to those numbers. But according to data from the state's agriculture department, the bird flu has hit our area hard.

Latest numbers of bird flu in our local counties

Here is a break down by county of the number of chickens and turkeys that have been killed or are being investigated because of bird flu.

Besides commercial chicken and turkey operation, 12,000 ducks in a commercial operation in Mercer County were killed after contracting bird flu. We will have more from DeWine's press conference at 10 and 11.
