Montezuma structure fire lasts hours long, causes thousands of dollars in damage

A Montezuma structure is a near total loss after an hours long fire Wednesday night (4/19/18).

The fire was reported around 8:30 pm. It took six hours and 210,000 gallons of water to put out the fire, and the Mercer County E.M.A. was called out for potentially hazardous materials. The building was a multi-use structure that housed a hot tub business, a workshop, and an apartment. A woman and four children were in the building at the time the fire started but were all able to get out safely. Crews were on location until early Thursday afternoon and are still working to determine what caused the fire.

"I'm right here now with the state fire marshal's office going through the fire," says Montezuma Fire Chief Ron Schulze. "We're going through out interviews with the tenants that were renting this structure and then after that we're gonna see if we can see what the cause is so right now it's under investigation."

The first 150 ft of the 400 ft structure are considered to be a total loss. Right now, the estimated damage could be as high as half a million dollars.
