New Bremen to build new bike path to the schools

Plans for a new underground bike path in New Bremen are in the works.

The new capital budget allotted $250,000 to the Village of New Bremen to build the multi-use path. It will be constructed somewhere along S.R. 274. With over 4,000 cars traveling along the road on any given day, the path will make for a safer trip for those walking to the schools.

"Right now, the closest stop light that we have for safety crossing is 3/4 of a mile away from the K-12 campus," says Angela Hamberg, Economic Developer for New Bremen. "When you figure if somebody wants to cross, they're not gonna go 3/4 of a mile in the opposite direction in order to safely cross, in order to come 3/4 of a mile back. Therefore, either they don't ride their bike, they don't cross the street, or they do and there's safety concerns in place."

Planning is still in the early stages and the village will need to find more funds to cover the cost. Hamberg says it is unlikely to see any sort of construction begin before 2019.
