MERCER COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - No charges will be filed against the Celina police officers in an August fatal officer-involved shooting.
According to WCSM, the case was presented to the Mercer County Grand Jury which decided not to hand down indictments against officers David Powell and Justin Rice for the death of 24-year-old Corey Andrew.
On August 25th, Andrew, a woman, and a 6-month-old child were in a vehicle in Eastview Park at 2 a.m. Powell approached the vehicle and said he smelled marijuana. Rice walked up toward the vehicle while Powell was giving Andrew a misdemeanor citation, then Andrew took off in the car and allegedly tried to hit Rice. Both Rice and Powell fired their guns. Andrew was hit several times and later died at the hospital. No one else was hit in the vehicle. Officers say they did not learn until after the shooting that there was a baby in the vehicle. Ohio BCI was called in to investigate the incident.
