LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Fun and learning went hand in hand Sunday afternoon at Ohio State University Lima during the annual Steam on the Quad. The weather was perfect for the event, which offered around 40 hands-on activities for students to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

The event is designed for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Activities were created by local 4-H programs, Ohio State departments, student clubs, local organizations, and businesses to showcase the variety of career fields available.

OSU Lima hosts annual Steam on the Quad to inspire students to find future careers

“Well, I think that for a lot of people, they get an idea in their head of, like, what science or engineering or math or art is, and they're kind of like, oh, that's for someone else that's smarter, or, like, you know, just talented, and they don't realize how much really encompasses those fields. So getting to really, like, get your hands dirty and see all the things that these professionals in these areas do that are so different than your expectation is what we're really hoping to get across," said Robin Bagley, assistant professor of evolutionary biology.

4-H and the Ohio State Extension Offices aim to help students find a path for their future.

“It's been a good partnership with OSU Lima and the students here that are in the education and engineering and arts departments to really kind of come together. And you know, a lot of our 4Hers move into OSU Lima and some other college spaces and the workforce. So it's important that they have some of those foundational skills and again, also maybe find a spark in something that they're really interested in,” said Jason Hedrick, OSU Extension educator.

Steam on the Quad has been held annually for approximately 10 years.
