Remembering Tarika Wilson Five Years Later

Friday night Tarika Wilson's family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember the young mother, who was shot and killed by a Lima police officer 5 years ago today.

Tarika Wilson was shot and killed in her home by a Lima Police Argent Joseph Chavalia during a drug raid gone bad. She was shot with her baby boy Sincere in her arms, who now lives with his grandmother Darla.

The shooting brought racial outrage between the community and police officials. Years after Wilson's death the Allen County Citizens Review Board was formed, in the hopes of improving communication and openness between the community. But Tarika's family members say that hasn't happened.

Joseph Chavalia was charged with negligent homicide and negligent assault, but was later acquitted. The family sued the city and was awarded $2.5 million dollars to provided for her 6 children she left behind. But no amount of money can ever bring Tarika back, and the pain of her loss for her family is felt everyday.
