DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) — St. John's senior Cameron Elwer doesn't miss a beat.
One of the top basketball players in state of Ohio, the Blue Jay senior is a two-time defending MAC Player of the Year, the all-time scoring leader in the MAC, and the 2025 Ohio Mr. Basketball runner-up. The list goes on.
Whether it's on the basketball court, or it's on the baseball diamond, St. John's senior Cameron Elwer delivers at the highest level and in every game and every moment.
"This whole process is, you know, the process that he's been going through since he's been a little guy. His consistent work ethic, his consistency, you know, not just on the basketball floor, but, you know, on the baseball field as well. Just him consistently trying to do things right and working extremely hard, and maybe the biggest part of it is his mental approach and his mental toughness," said Aaron Elwer.
"I kind of grew up, obviously, playing basketball my whole life, and then at nine years old, I kind of picked up a baseball, started playing with my brothers and my dad. And my dad played collegiately baseball at St. Francis University, so he always had a background of that, and he kind of taught me my way," Cameron Elwer said.
Cameron's love has always been basketball. Now, the all-time MAC scoring leader is taking his talents to the Division I level at Furman University.
"The guys there and the coaches, I spent a lot of time with the guys, and we made some good connections, and then the coaching staff was recruiting me really well. So, credit to them for that, but the four schools that I was down to, they all had great people, but it was a really tough decision, and Furman was ultimately my decision," Elwer said.
"When he went through the process, academics were a big part of it, and Furman is just that. It is a very good university, high academic standards. So, when he talks about it, checking a lot of the boxes, Furman University did that for him and for us as a family. So, he's going to be challenged, still in the classroom like he is here," Aaron Elwer said.
When it comes to his academics at DSJ, Cameron is a top scholar, sporting a 4.0 GPA.
"What stands out about him the most is he's not afraid of a challenge. I think obviously that makes him a great basketball player, but makes him a great student too. I think, you know, that competitive nature comes into the classroom and he attacks that challenge full on and is able to be better for it," said Mike Knott.
For Cameron Elwer, the opportunity to play at St. John's has meant more than wins or records. It's about gratitude, leadership, and the example he's tried to set.
"Being able to just to play in this program meant a lot to me and my family, and I was just extremely blessed that I got this opportunity. I've tried to be a leader both on and off the court. I've tried to kind of make the right decisions and try to lead by example, and I hope people can see me as that person," Elwer said.
Congratulations to Cameron Elwer — our newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
