ST. MARYS, OH (WLIO) -Â Many gathered at the St. Marys Theater & Grand Opera House on Wednesday night to enjoy some basketball games- but not games from this century.
The Rider Rewind brought St. Marys vs. Celina High School basketball games from the early and mid-1950s to the big screen, complete with live play-by-play commentary of the film. The audience included people who were originally in attendance, playing, or cheerleading in the games shown. Those individuals also helped explain how the game of basketball has changed since their high school days 70 years ago.
"You see different shots. You actually do see the underhanded or what was affectionately dubbed the granny shot for free throws. You see that on the game film. You see one-legged set shots, where the shooting leg is up in the air, and two-handed set shots. Passing is a much different game back then, it's actually a little more fancy than what you see today," said Doug Spencer, project coordinator at the St. Marys Theater & Grand Opera House.
The game films were donated to the theater by a 1957 St. Marys Memorial High School alum.
