VAN WERT, OH (WLIO) - The end of August and Labor Day weekend brings the 168th annual Van Wert County Fair.
The 7-day event couldn't have asked for better weather to begin the week, as this year's fair has a long list of food, games, and rides with additional vendors and live entertainment to choose from.
Folks who came out today had the opportunity to see the official grand opening ceremony headlined by the evening's harness horse racing event.
But with blazing hot temperatures, both fairgoers and livestock owners must remember the importance of staying cool and hydrated.
But with blazing hot temperatures, both fairgoers and livestock owners must remember the importance of staying cool and hydrated.
"Well, it's extremely important. We don't want to see anybody have any issues with the heat, heat strokes, or anything heat-related. We got ample water and vendors out here for folks. We allow companion pets on the grounds. With the livestock entries, our folks know how to take care of them. They keep water in front them and fans to keep them cool. Obviously, we don't try to work them and stress them anymore than we have to in heat like this," told Mike Poling, Fair Manager.
"It's important so that the animals don't get sick themselves. Making sure they're getting water constantly. We have a lot of fans on them and make sure to open the windows and the barn to have good airflow so that they don't lose any coverage. Then, they can look their best on show day but also perform their best to stay healthy and make it through," added Elyssa Renner, Van Wert Junior Fair Board.
