AEP Ohio and utility companies around the county are observing Utility Scam Awareness Week, highlighting some of the scams that customers may face.
According to Cheryl Parsons with the Better Business Bureau of West Central Ohio, there are things to look out for to spot a potential scam;Â that includes the person threatening to shut off your utilities in short amount of time and asking for immediate payment, often with a pre-paid card, like an Amazon or iTunes card. This could happen by phone, email, or at your door. If you do encounter a scammer, Parsons says that the most important thing is to report it.
"When you do receive a call or anything you do need to be aware that this is a scam, AEP will not call you about this - if you’re past due on your account you’ll get notices in the mail from AEP, so you should call them right away and report it," said Parsons.
Parsons says you can also report a potential scam to the BBB.
