VAN WERT, Ohio (WLIO) — Fifth graders in Van Wert County stepped out of the classroom to explore what their futures could hold.

This marks the fourth year Career Connections has hosted its “Let’s Get Down to Business” event for fifth graders from Crestview, Lincolnview, Van Wert, and St. Mary’s of the Assumption schools.

A total of 260 students participated in hands-on activities, financial education, and career exploration as they visited local businesses and agencies.

The goal of the event is to introduce students to the range of career opportunities available in Van Wert County.

It's a great transition as they get ready to hit Junior High/Middle School, and really letting them know that, hey, Van Wert is a great place to raise a family. It's a great place to work, and there are a variety of opportunities, whether it's trade, whether it's education, whether it's just working in general. And we want them to know those opportunities are here,” said Brad Harsha, board chair of Career Connections of Van Wert County.

In addition to events like “Let’s Get Down to Business,” Career Connections also provides financial literacy education in Van Wert County schools, starting as early as second grade and continuing through middle school.
