June 18, 2024, Press Release from Solvita: DAYTON, Ohio - Summer arrives on Friday, June 21 with high temperatures and a low blood supply. Solvita has advice to make it safe to donate, even in the heat of summer.
There is no substitute for blood donations and there is no vacation from blood demand. Currently all blood types are in low supply and there is a critical shortage of type O and type B blood.
As donations decline during the summer months usage at hospitals tends to increase, as more cars on the roads and more outdoor activities contribute to more emergency room visits.
Solvita is encouraging people to donate on the first day of summer at the “Welcome to Summer – Play it Safe When You Donate Blood Drive” at the Solvita Dayton Center.
Everyone who registers to donate Friday or Saturday, June 21-22 at the Solvita Dayton Center, 349 S. Main St. gets the choice of a Kroger $10 gift card or a $10 e-gift card, plus the “From One to Many” t-shirt.
Make an appointment on the Donor Time app, call (937) 461-3220, or go to www.donortime.com .
Play it Safe When You Donate
Making a safe blood donation during hot weather requires special care. Here’s a guide to ensure a safe and healthy blood donation during hot weather:
Stay Hydrated Before, During, and After Donation
- Pre-Hydration: Drink plenty of water or non-caffeinated fluids at least 24 hours before donating. Aim for at least 16 ounces (500 ml) of water before the donation.
- During Donation: Solvita provides fluids to keep you hydrated during the process.
- Post-Hydration: Continue drinking fluids after donating to help replenish the fluid volume and prevent dehydration.
Dress Appropriately
- Light Clothing: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to stay cool and comfortable.
- Layers: Consider wearing layers so you can adjust your clothing according to the temperature inside the donation center or blood drive location.
Eat a Balanced Meal
- Nutritious Meal: Eat a healthy meal 2-3 hours before donating.
- Avoid Fatty Foods.
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
- No Alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol 24 hours before donating, as it can lead to dehydration.
- Limit Caffeine: While a small amount of caffeine is okay, excessive intake can dehydrate you, so it’s best to limit it.
Rest and Relax
- Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get a good night's sleep (at least 7-9 hours) before your donation day.
- Stay Cool: Avoid strenuous activities or prolonged exposure to the sun before and after donating.
Plan Donation Timing
- Early or Late Appointments: Schedule your donation in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
Communicate with Solvita
- Health Conditions: Inform the staff if you have any medical conditions or if you are on medication that might affect your ability to donate blood.
- Heat Concerns: Let the staff know if you’re feeling unwell or if you’re concerned about the heat.
Post-Donation Care
- Rest and Monitor: Sit for at least 10-15 minutes after donating.
- Avoid Heat Exposure: Stay in a cool place and avoid hot environments immediately after donating.
- Healthy Snacks: Eat a light snack provided by Solvita to help stabilize your blood sugar levels.
