The parks district received a $2 million grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources earlier this year to be invested in Kendrick Woods park. The project at Kendrick Woods has progressed quite well and is about 75% complete, according to park officials. The project includes 103 acres of wetland re-establishment to help create new habitats and improve water quality in the Auglaize River.

The entire project at Kendrick Woods aims to be completed by the end of 2025.

We caught up with parks director Tyler Black on why Kendrick Woods was the choice for the state funding.

"We looked at Kendrick Woods from a couple of different angles. One, it's our biggest park from an acreage standpoint; it's 550 acres. But then also, with its proximity to the Auglaize River, the water quality in the Auglaize River, which eventually flows into the Maumee River, and then in Lake Erie, is kind of a big deal. And so we look at the areas of where pollution and some of those things start to happen and contaminants and that kind of thing get into the river, and we want to take care of it at the point where it's entering instead of trying to treat it in Lake Erie," said Tyler Black, executive director of the Johnny Appleseed Metro Parks District.
