Teachers at Lima West Middle School utilized a creative, fun strategy to show their students they can learn scientific principles through a popular game. You may have played "Tug-of-War" as a child to test your team's strength, but this once Olympic sport was the highlight of STEM education today at West!

About a dozen students from West Middle School were at the Allen County Human Society as part of their “Spartan Give” project. The kids helped groom the animals and even did a little laundry, folding dozens of the hundreds of blankets used in the kennels for the animals. Those participating enjoyed spending time helping.

About fifteen 7th and 8th grade students have been staying after school three days a week for the new Lima West Middle School Extension Program. They participate in activities that expand on what they learn in the classroom.

Students of Lima West Middle School took a break from the books and learned about some life lessons this morning. The Positive Lifestyle Program was brought to the students to teach them about positive paths toward success. The program brings in African-American speakers to share their life journey and how they got to where they are today. The program not only teaches the students about making the right choices toward a career path but also teaches them about self-esteem, cultural tolerance and exposure to new careers. The students may walk away with a new role model.

Students at one area middle school got the chance to show off their singing and professional skills at Wednesday evening's dinner theater. Career connections and choir students from West Middle School hosted Dinner with Walt, a Disney-themed dinner theater. Throughout the night the choir students performed a number of popular Disney tunes, while career connections students prepared and served a spaghetti dinner. One of the teachers who organized this event says it's a great way for students to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to the real world.

Lima West Middle School CTAG students are gearing up to make a statement in our state's capital. Tuesday(4/30) is the annual "We are the Majority" drug-free rally that is held in Columbus. This event was originally organized by the Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network, which draws in students from around the state.
