LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - As students returned for the second semester, Lima West Middle School hosted its second annual Winter Reading Night, giving students the opportunity to explore a variety of literary genres.

Guest readers, including Lima City Schools Superintendent Andre Rudolph and Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith, read to district families during the event. Book selections ranged from fantasy and science fiction to historical fiction, nonfiction and mystery. Guest artists also participated, illustrating images related to the stories being read.

Lima West Middle School hosts Winter Reading Night to promote literacy

"We want them to be lifelong learners, but our big goal is to get them to understand the 4 concepts of themes," says T.J. Winkler, Principal, Lima West Middle School. "You know, help prepare for the state testing and maybe help some of our parents help our students so they can be better prepared for state tests coming up this spring."

With spring state testing approaching, school officials say increased exposure to literature helps students prepare academically. Students also had the chance to read to some of the district’s resource officers’ K-9s.
