Area democrats, elected democratic officials, and democratic political candidates came together Friday evening at the Allen County Fairgrounds for the Allen County Democratic Party picnic.
Rob Portman decided not to run again for U.S. Senate again after 12 years of representing Ohio in Washington D.C. He felt that political gridlock in the nation’s capital made things harder to get done. But what he did accomplice was to help curb the growing problem of drug overdoses and addiction in Ohio and the U.S. by sponsoring bills to increase legal powers of law enforcement to fight drugs like Fentanyl. Also, he added more options and funding to get people addicted to the drugs the treatment they need. When we asked him what work he was most proud of, he said supporting the military personnel and facilities were at the top of the list.
Members of the Ohio Senate Majority Caucus today unanimously elected Senate President Matt Huffman (R-Lima) to once again serve as President of the Ohio Senate for the 135th General Assembly. First elected to the Ohio Senate in 2016, Senator Matt Huffman was re-elected in 2020 to his second term. He has served as Senate President during the 134th General Assembly, and prior to that as Majority Floor Leader. Huffman previously served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, culminating in his election as Speaker Pro Tempore.
Sherrod Brown hosted the roundtable and discussed the "Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act of 2022", which will secure access to the Department of Veteran Affairs' healthcare and disability benefits for veterans who were exposed to toxic chemicals. Some veterans who joined the roundtable were exposed to or affected by burn pits during their military service.
Senator Rob Portman recently gave an update on the fighting in Ukraine on the Senate floor. He says the Biden administration needs to deliver to their army the long-range missiles to help level the playing field against the Russian army. The United States and other allies have delivered just a portion of the missile systems that the Ukrainian army needs.
Senator Matt Huffman explains, “We’re obviously trying to complete the work of the commission to the extent that we can with the somewhat constrictive parameters that we have from the various courts. A lot is going on. We have a guy that knows much or more about redistricting than I do is Senator Rob McColley and that’s why I wanted to make sure we made this change and it’s a good one.”
Last month, Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, along with a dozen of their colleagues ask the Department of Defense and State Department to speed up the request. Now that the sale is complete, Brown has sent a letter to the President asking that the delivery to the NATO ally be made as quick as possible because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Abrams purchase was worth approximately $6 billion. Brown also says that Poland has expressed interest in buying other military items from the United States and he would like to see that request be granted because of the threat by the Russian Federation.
Senator Sherrod Brown says that his and Senator Rob Portman’s “Leveling the Playing Field 2.0” is close to becoming law. Brown says the bill will update and continue to strengthen trade laws to make sure they are effective tools to fight back against unfair trade practices, which in turn, will protect American workers.
The announcement that was made in January will create 3,000 new manufacturing jobs and thousands more construction jobs. Intel says that the two factories are just the beginning, with the potential of having eight factories at that site. Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown were on hand for the announcement and say that this is a good step toward shoring up the supply chain and putting American workers first.
