The Shawnee Optimist Club holding their annual Honor and Achievement Luncheon. The awards are to recognize individuals who have shown their desire to be role models and leaders not only in the classroom but also in their communities. Students from Apollo, Shawnee, Lima Central Catholic and Perry High Schools were honored.
The update was provided at the Shawnee Optimist Club during their beginning of the year meeting. The project will bring a new neighborhood to Cridersville right next to I-75 and have restaurants and retail stores, living spaces, parks, and an entertainment district.

Select high school seniors were invited to receive the "Students of Honor & Achievement" award at the Shawnee Optimist Club meeting on Wednesday. To motivate them for life after graduation, 1997 Shawnee High School graduate and entrepreneur PJ McGuire spoke on her own experiences. Her biggest lessons have come from inventing the "Wrapperoo", a hair-drying towel that doubles as a styling cape. Although this wasn't her original plan, she's put what she's learned from it into her speech.
The Shawnee Optimist Club awarded a group of young writers at their Thursday meeting for work in a recent speech and essay contest. The categories for the contest include oratorical writing, which is designed for public speaking, while the essay category is more about storytelling. The first-place winners of each category received medals for their achievements and read their work in front of the club. The topics for both success pieces revolved around reaching your dreams and healing the world through optimism.
The Shawnee Optimist Club gave out two of their annual awards to community members at their meeting Tuesday afternoon. Joyce Wohlgamuth with Shawnee Schools was given the Educator of the Year award and Det. Don Marik was awarded the title of Safety Officer of the Year.
The Shawnee Optimist Club hosted its annual basketball competition that many say was too hard to pass up. Close to a hundred kids participated in this year's Pass, Dribble, Shoot contest.
Kids completed a series of different activities that tested their passing, dribbling and shooting skills.Area coaches, high school students and volunteers helped lead the different activities. This free event is held every year as a way to give back to area kids.

Twenty students from four different schools that are in the Shawnee Noon Optimist district were given the club’s annual “Students of Honor and Achievement” award. These young adults have shown a desire to excel in all areas including academics, sports, arts, and science. Organizers say they wanted to honor them because they are our future.
