Friday marks the first day of summer, and with temperatures heating up, many people took the opportunity to soak up some sunshine. Faurot Park was a popular destination, especially the splash pad, where area kids stayed cool in the heat.
Registration for the annual program begins Tuesday, May 20, with extended office hours at the Lima Parks Department. Parents can sign their children up at the department’s office in the City Garage on Collett Street from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 20 and 21.
There is no question that it's sweltering outside. But that's not stopping some activities from still going on. The City of Lima's Summer Playground Program is doing all it can to beat the heat and still have fun. The kids hit the playground early in the day. You can tell they are taking it easy, finding some shade, and exerting a little bit of energy here and there. They enjoy the air conditioning at Liberty Arts Magnet School as they get lunch as part of the Lima City Schools free summer lunch program. Then it's back to Faurot Park and a cool treat. The kids also know to take a break and rehydrate.
While the City of Lima's Summer Playground Program doesn't start until Monday, the staff were out at the park getting geared up for the summer. With only one location this year, the 75 spots for the summer filled up within two days. Today the staff were out at Faurot Park getting to know each other and meshing as a team. They include teachers from area schools and recent college graduates, all looking forward to providing a fun and educational summer for area children.
As the school year comes to a close, many families in the area look forward to a favorite summer program to keep their kids busy. Sign-up for the City of Lima's Summer Park Program is set to begin, but there are some changes parents need to take note of. Faurot Park will be the only location, as the city saw a decline in the number of college students applying to work the summer playground program. They are going to accept 75 children to be a part of the longtime summer activity, and sign-up will be first come, first served. The activities for the 8-week program will still be jam-packed with fun and interesting programming.
Faurot and Robb Parks were filled with eager kids wanting to enjoy their summer. The playground program offers plenty of supervised activities for any child ages 6 to 12 years old. Lunch is even included through the Lima City Schools Summer Lunch program. Even with dodging the rain today the program is off to a good start.
While the City of Lima’s Summer Playground Program couldn’t happen this year, the City of Lima Parks and Recreation Department wanted to provide some sort of activities that the kids can do with the whole family. This week, the “Virtual Playground” program was unveiled. You can find it on the department's Facebook page with a different activity each day. There is “Academic Monday”, “Trivia Tuesday” and “Where’s Beanie” among other activities. Organizers say the daily tasks are created for the whole family to enjoy and keep the kids engaged over the summer.
Friday marked the first official day of the summer season, and the kids in the City of Lima's Summer Playground Program took full advantage of the nice weather. The kids from the Robb and Faurot Park programs were at Schoonover Park enjoying the community pool. After a couple of rainy days, it was a good opportunity for the kids to soak up the sun and enjoy one of the perks of the parks.
The City of Lima's Summer Playground program is set to begin next Monday. The playground leaders and staff were introduced Wednesday at Lima Mayor David Berger's weekly press conference. These students will be one on one with the youngsters that will be attending the summer program more as mentors than supervisors. Many of the leaders participated in the program as children and say it was instrumental in their childhood.
It's hard to believe but summer is not that far away and the City of Lima is looking to fill their Summer Playground Program.
