PIQUA, Ohio (WLIO) — The second game of the Division VII district final doubleheader featured the Botkins Trojans facing the Miami Valley Christian Academy Lions.
Botkins, the Shelby County League champions, jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. James Steinke lowered his shoulder and powered through the defense for two as the Trojans built a five-point advantage.
In the second quarter, Miami Valley Christian responded. With the Trojans trailing by three, Will Monnin knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 12 apiece.
Moments later, Botkins answered from beyond the arc. Senior Tucker Huelskamp buried a triple to put the Trojans back in front.
Botkins took control in the second half behind Owen Zimpfer, who scored a team-high 17 points to lead the charge.
The Trojans went on to defeat Miami Valley Christian 64-41, capturing their fourth district championship in the last six years.
The win also marked a milestone for head coach Phil Groves, who earned his 100th career victory at Botkins.
Botkins will face the Lehman Catholic Cavaliers in the regional semifinals on Wednesday, March 11th at Butler High School.
