INDIANAPOLIS — High school baseball will implement a new safety measure beginning with the 2027 season, as a double first base becomes mandatory nationwide.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee approved the change during its summer meetings in Indianapolis. The rule is aimed at minimizing collisions between fielders and runners at first base.

The new base will be split into two halves—white in fair territory for fielders, and a contrasting color in foul territory for runners. On force plays, the runner must use the colored side while the fielder uses the white. Failure to do so will result in interference or obstruction calls, depending on the offending party.

The double base has already gained traction at the collegiate level, having been used during this year’s College World Series. The NFHS says the change is part of its ongoing commitment to player safety.
