LEIPSIC, Ohio (WLIO) — Leipsic senior Zac Lammers is the only three-sport athlete in his grade.
The hard work and dedication doesn't stop there. Lammers excels academically as well, sporting a 4.0 GPA, tops in his class.
"To me, what stands out the most with Zac has got to his heart — I mean, you can see it on a daily basis at practice and then even in games," said Leipsic boys basketball head coach Devin Mangas. "It doesn't matter if we're winning or losing or what the score is. He just flies around constantly and he kind of helps get those other guys going by doing so."
Lammers is all about putting in the work. He's the only three-sport athlete at Leipsic High School, taking part in basketball, golf and baseball.
"So it starts with golf," Lammers said. "Golf, it's really all in your own mind. Once you get to the end of the season with golf, you've got the right mindset going into basketball. And then throughout the season with basketball, you start to pick up teamwork. Because golf, you're just playing against yourself really. And then when you go into baseball, it's both, so it really just goes perfectly together."
Zac not only shines in the field of play, but also in the classroom. The senior has a 4.0 GPA.
"I mean, it's not easy. It's hard, but my family helps me so much," Lammers said. "If I have a question that I don't know, I'll go ask my brothers. My dad, he tries to help me as much as he can. My mom, she helps me. It's just the whole family helps me to the point that I'm at right now."
"He drives a lot of the conversation in the math classroom," said Leipsic math teacher Chelsea Escamilla. "He also is determined to make sure that he does well. He also makes sure that others around him understand what he's doing. So similarly on the court when he's playing well with his teammates, he also does that in the classroom."
After he graduates from Leipsic, Lammers plans to attend the University of Toledo to major in mechanical engineering.
"I've always loved math and science," Lammers said. "In my freshman year, I was given the chance to take an engineering class at a neighboring school. So I tried it, and I just fell in love with it. Ever since then, I knew freshman year that that's what I wanted to do. And I just decided this year where I was going to go."
At Leipsic, being a scholar athlete means more than grades and stats. For Zac Lammers, it's about showing up for the people around him.
"The main reason I'm here is because the community," Lammers said. "I just want to be known as the guy, always having a smile on his face, always working hard. Whatever I'm doing, I'm working hard to do the best that I can."
Congratulations to Zac Lammers — our newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
