With only two more days until Christmas, the last thing shoppers want to think about besides and getting last minute gifts and planning trips is identity theft, a situation that can really put a damper on the holiday spirit.

Although no one wants to imagine it happening to them, experts says identity theft occurs a lot more often than people think.

“Identity theft has become common in today’s connected society,” said Ed Conley, director, Insurance Sales and Financial Services for AAA Ohio Auto Club. “In extreme cases, identity theft can wreak havoc on a victim’s life for years to come. Prevention is always the best defense.”

One way Conley says consumers can protect their identity is by thinning their wallet. He says they should only carry the necessary credit cards they will need for their trip.

Another thing Conley suggests consumers do is pack an alternative pay method such as cash or a loadable prepaid card.

Conley also suggests that consumers protect their mobile devices by always using the auto-lock feature to protect personal information.

Using radio frequency identification, such as credit cards and debit cards, are also beneficial, as it will make it difficult for thieves to steal your identity.

Another thing Conley suggest is monitoring your accounts while traveling by making a lists of credit card account numbers and customer service phone numbers.

The last thing Conley suggests consumers do is protect their home and vehicles.

“Should the worst happen, and your identity is compromised, having identity theft coverage on your auto or home policy can help,” said Conley. “While coverage won’t proactively prevent identity theft, it may ease the burden of going through the recovery process.”

Conley says consumers who implement all six safeguard tips are bound to have a worry-free and fulfilling experience while traveling during the holiday season.
