African Americans at Greater Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one killer in the world and statistics show it affects African Americans at a greater number than Caucasians.

About 700,000 people will have a heart attack this year in the United States, about 15% of those people will die.

Dr. Julius Kato, a cardiologist with St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima says many African Americans are susceptible to high blood pressure which is a major factor in heart disease.

He adds, that socioeconomic factors also come into play as many African Americans don’t get the needed medical care to prevent heart problems.
