Exploitation is the number one abuse of the elderly with hundreds of scams, calls, and e-mails. That is according to Adult Protective Services.
Elder abuse is an issue that needs to be talked about. It comes in many forms from physical abuse to neglect and exploitation. Adult Protective Services says 1 in 10 seniors are at risk of abuse and only 1 in 14 cases is ever reported. Their office investigates and evaluates potential referrals that come to their offices.
Jacob Larger, Adult Protective Services administrator, explains “What we provide is the ability to really augment our services by utilizing community agencies throughout the county as well as law enforcement officials to connect those individuals to the services that they need to bring them to that next step whatever that might look like.”
Allen County Commissioners providing a proclamation to the agency to bring awareness to Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th. The public is encouraged to wear purple that day in support.
