GOMER, Ohio (WLIO) - Residents and Sugar Creek Township officials are celebrating the removal of a longtime nuisance property in Gomer.
The Allen County Land Bank demolished a more than 100-year-old home Monday morning. No one had lived at the property for several years, and township trustees and neighbors had been asking the land bank to demolish the blighted home.
The Allen County Land Bank has used millions of dollars to demolish about 270 residential and commercial properties. The land from those properties can then be reused for new housing or businesses throughout Allen County.
The Gomer property will be returned to green space and could be available for further development in the future.
“So this is a prime example of working with our township trustees and the neighborhoods to help make our communities better places and safer. You'll notice this property has a park right in the backyard. And so by getting rid of this, by helping clean up the neighborhood and all of the nuisances, we're making this a safer community for Gomer. I'm grateful for these opportunities to be able to share with our communities and help together do positive things,” said Rachael Gilroy, administrator of the Allen County Land Bank.
Gilroy said the land bank has another six or seven properties across the county scheduled for demolition this fall.
