VAN WERT, Ohio (WLIO) — The Elida Bulldogs opened Western Buckeye League play on the road Friday night, taking on the Van Wert Cougars.

Van Wert entered the matchup having won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams.

The Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Zach Crummey handed the ball off to Xavier Kelly, who juked and weaved his way into the end zone to extend Van Wert's advantage.

Later in the quarter, Elida moved into Van Wert territory, but Caden Collins intercepted a pass and raced up the sideline to give the Cougars prime field position.

Van Wert's defense came up with another big play shortly afterward. Cody Gracely stripped the ball, with Logan Ramsdail recovering for the Cougars.

Still leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Crummey connected with Kelly for a 60-yard touchdown. Kelly made a cut and raced down the field to give Van Wert a 21-0 advantage.

Elida finally got on the board just before halftime when Shane Goebel ran for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs continued to battle in the second half, but Van Wert maintained its lead and held on for a 31-21 victory.
