LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen County Sharks have claimed their second Division III State Special Olympics Basketball Championship, adding another gold medal to their collection.

The team was honored during Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith’s media briefing, recognizing their hard work and dedication. The Sharks have competed in the state tournament multiple times, bringing home bronze, silver, and gold medals over the years. While they enjoy winning, the players say the camaraderie of being a team is just as important.

"Well, it wasn't easy. It was hard competition that we were in, but it was a pretty good feeling, you know, becoming a champion again," said Anthony Chambers. "I did it for my family and my loved ones and also for the people who supported us."

Maurice Meeks expressed gratitude for the team’s perseverance. "We persevered, and we got to go for the community, something I'm very proud of. I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, because without him, none of this is possible."

For Johnnie Wilson, the victory was extra special. "Grateful, like, literally. It’s my first time bringing home gold. We faced a hard team that was good, but we fought hard."
