LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - A new grove in downtown Lima is a place for reflection that has been 50 years in the making.
On Tuesday, the Veterans Memorial Grove was dedicated to all veterans, past, present and future. More than 200 people turned out as the 17-foot monument towered over the ceremony. City and county officials, along with veterans, active military and families, were all on hand for the special occasion. More than 1,300 people, businesses and organizations donated time and money to create this tribute which has already made an impact.
"To have a place to come and reflect, to come and share stories, to come and just memorialize, is a wonderful tribute to all of our veterans, and we couldn't be more appreciative for what everyone has done, and everyone who facilitated this put time and effort into it," said Dr. Timothy White, US Army veteran 1981-2005. "We just appreciate all their efforts."
"With the memorial here, it's a good dedication, and it took a long time and process to get it all taken care of, and I'm grateful for it," said Robert Moreland, US Marine Corps 1977-1983.
"I think it's a real honor, and so many times when we got out of the service, we were looked down upon, but today we are getting recognized more for the time we did spend," said Larry McClure, US Air Force 1966-1970. "I think this is a very nice tribute. It's very nice."
Each branch of the military is highlighted in the grove and a wreath was placed at each one as part of the dedication.
