LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — With school out for the summer, some families may find it harder to keep food on the table.

To help fill that gap, the Lima City Schools will launch their annual Summer Lunch Program on Monday, June 2, offering free meals to children ages 1 to 18. Children do not need to be enrolled in Lima City Schools to participate. The program provides one balanced meal per day, Monday through Thursday, throughout the summer.

Free summer meals available for kids at multiple Lima locations

The Lima City Schools will launch their annual Summer Lunch Program on Monday, June 2, offering free meals to children ages 1 to 18.

Hot meals will be served at six locations, including four school sites—Heritage, Independence, Unity, and Liberty Arts Magnet—where lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition, the Spartan Lunch Express mobile unit will stop at Lincoln Park from 11 to 11:20 a.m. and Faurot Park from noon to 12:20 p.m. All meals must be eaten on site and cannot be taken to go. This summer’s program will also feature a special visitor.

“On June 9, we are actually having Lunch, the Ohio summer lunch mascot, coming,” said Carrie Woodruff, food service director for Lima City Schools. “He’s going to be giving out coloring pages, and we’ll have a few giveaways. He’s coming to support our summer lunch program.”

In partnership with the Children’s Hunger Alliance, shelf-stable meals will also be distributed at Lima West Apartments from 11 to 11:20 a.m. and Maplewood Apartments from 11:30 to 11:50 a.m.
