LIMA, OH (WLIO) – Many people laced up their shoes on the Fourth of July holiday to hit the streets with friends and family.

The Star Spangled Spectacular kicked off a full day of activities with the Freedom 5K. Over 400 runners and walkers braved the heat Friday morning to take on the more than three-mile course around Lima. For more than two decades, the 5K has been a tradition for individuals and families to start their Independence Day celebrations.

“I Just love seeing people come out every year and they've got race T shirts from like, all the years past, which is always really cool to see. We had some volunteers from Superior Credit Union and from St. Rita's this year to help us do the pre-race registration, check in, and then also do the barricades for us. I love seeing everybody like they'll come up and register in groups of six. They've got the whole family here. The kids are running. They've got the strollers. It's just a nice, family friendly thing. And we're really glad we could put it on,” says Kelsey Joseph, Chair of the SSS Committee & Director of Marketing for Superior Credit Union.

Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each age category. The race was sponsored by the Orthopedic Institute of Ohio.
