LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – With sunny skies on the Fourth of July, the City of Lima celebrated the holiday by helping kids learn how to fish.
For the past decade, the annual Fishing Derby has been a staple of the Star Spangled Spectacular, giving families a chance to learn basic angling skills like tying knots, baiting hooks, and removing fish from their lines.
Children reeled in Bluegill, Perch and even a few Bass from the pond at Faurot Park. But beyond the catch, the event was all about spending quality time outdoors with family.

“We got more and more youth that are learning how to fish. They're able to spend time with their parents, enjoy the outdoor activities and see what's out in the nature and the parks that the city of Lima has to offer,” said Randy Kohli, Lima’s Utilities Security Officer.
Whether or not the kids caught a fish, each one walked away with a free fishing pole and tackle box, thanks to a grant from the Ohio Department of Resources Wildlife Division.
