LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Many Girl Scouts are putting their entrepreneurship skills to the test as Girl Scout cookie season gets underway.
On Tuesday afternoon at Camp Woodhaven in Lima, Girl Scouts Abigail Morton, Kyla Fischer and Sophia Graham were busy preparing boxes of cookies for upcoming orders. Along with longtime favorites such as Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties, a new flavor is debuting this year called “ExploreMores.”
The cookie is inspired by rocky road–flavored ice cream. Between filling orders, the Girl Scouts shared how cookie sales help support their program and the lessons they gain through the experience, including responsibility, teamwork and business skills.
"It's important to go out and sell these cookies because we can make more extra money to go to extra places," says Kyla Fischer, Girl Scout, Troop 2104.
"We can go to lodges and spend the night and do fun activities, and we can also do other activities at different spots like horseback riding and roller-skating," says Abigail Morton, Girl Scout, Troop 2093.
"Being a girl scout can help you figure out how to speak to customers, how to sell cookies, what not to do and what to do, and how to be an entrepreneur," says Sophia Graham, Girl Scout, Troop 2093.
For those who do not know a Girl Scout to purchase cookies from, orders can be placed online through the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio website. Cookies are also available at the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio office in Lima, located at 1870 W. Robb Ave.
