LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - With extreme temperatures on the way, animal experts are reminding pet owners: if you’re hot, your pets are too.

Watch for signs of overheating in animals, including heavy panting, lethargy, or visible distress. If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to the shade, provide water, and cool them down gradually with a damp cloth.

“Great Pyrenees, larger breeds, they're going to overheat a little bit quicker. Any dog is susceptible to it. You just have to watch the temperatures and be aware that if you're hot, they're hot,” said Deb Logan from the Auglaize County Humane Society.

Never leave pets in a hot car — even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise dangerously fast. If you see a pet alone in a hot car, alert authorities immediately. Do not attempt to break into the vehicle yourself.

If you're hot, so are your pets—how to keep them safe

Before walking your dog, check the pavement with your hand. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot for their paws.
