The first two rounds consisted of multiple-choice questions about the laws and policies that make up the government.

The first two rounds consisted of multiple-choice questions about the laws and policies that make up the government. The top five students advanced to the oral portion of the competition. To even qualify for Tuesday’s event, participants had to submit one of the top essays on how they would use civics to improve their communities.

“They've already done the first important thing, which was to be really active. They had to choose a topic and then figure out how it tied to kind of civic responsibility, and so that's what their essays were about today. We're just really hoping that they see that kind of additional knowledge is fun and also that it really does play an important part in their life, particularly as they grow up to be leaders of our communities,” said Brian Young, chair of the Legislative Committee.
