Lima Police and Fire Departments unite for officer battling cancer

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The City of Lima’s safety services are coming together to support one of their own facing a cancer diagnosis.

Lima Police Officer Zach Mortimer was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and his brothers and sisters in the Lima Police and Lima Fire departments are rallying behind him.

The departments will face off in a friendly softball game this Sunday, October 12th at 11:30 a.m. at the Lima Senior High School baseball field. The community is invited to attend and show support for Officer Mortimer.

“We’re just wanting the community to come out. We will be taking donations at the door, but they’re not expected. So it’s going to be free to everybody and just come out and support your firefighters and police officers,” said Sgt. Brittney Osting with the Lima Police Department.

In addition to the game, a traditional benefit fundraiser will take place at the Fraternal Order of Police on Robb Avenue Sunday at 3 p.m. The event will feature food, raffles, and other activities to support the Mortimer family during this difficult time.
