LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Mayor Sharetta Smith addressed the Kiwanis Club of Lima on Tuesday, updating members on major city initiatives, including the nearly $12 million Lima Community Aquatic Center.
The project, now in its final stages, will provide both indoor and outdoor swimming options year-round. Located near Lima Stadium Park, the facility is designed to address limited access to public swimming in the area.
“The Greater Lima area once had 11 pools,” Mayor Smith said. “Today, there are just four — all of which require a membership.”
“Today I’m going to be talking about the opening of the Lima Community Aquatic Park,” she told the club. “We’re going to have a ribbon-cutting for that facility on June 27. As part of our update to various community partners and stakeholders, I’m here to talk with the Kiwanis Club about where we’re at. We’re wrapping up construction for that project.”
Mayor Smith emphasized the center’s potential impact on public health, recreation, and safety. Lima City Schools also plan to incorporate swim education into their curriculum to ensure all students learn water safety skills. The facility is expected to open to the public by the end of July.
