LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio State Lima students are kicking off Black History Month with the 19th annual "Peanut Butter Bash," an event that celebrates the legacy of George Washington Carver while fostering discussions on Black history and unity.
The event offers students a variety of peanut butter-based snacks and foods in honor of Carver, who famously pioneered numerous uses for peanuts. While the treats appeal to peanut butter lovers, the bash also serves as an opportunity for students to engage in dialogue about how African Americans of the past have paved the way for progress today.
“Not only the history of peanut butter, but also the history of great men and women who have made advancements and have been here for a long time in today's history. So, it's not only as simple as peanut butter, but future advancements in technology in our society,” says Nyah Smith, a freshman at Ohio State Lima.
“It's actually shown like how far that we have come, and that how important it is to students nowadays to keep that trend going, and just to have that feeling of unity and uplifting others,” says Aaron Hutchins, a freshman at Ohio State Lima.

“I'm a freshman here, and I feel like I've been given so much opportunity from the, you know, amazing Black people who came before me, like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and all those amazing people, and so I feel like they have paved the way for me. And George Washington Carver making these great inventions has also inspired us,” says Enki White, a freshman at Ohio State Lima.
The campus will be hosting additional events throughout February in honor of Black History Month.
