SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, ALLEN COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) — Shawnee Township Trustees learned at a special meeting that the township’s finances are in good shape as they reviewed their preliminary budget for 2026.

The proposed $16 million budget will be submitted to Allen County officials as part of the next step in the annual budgeting process. So far this year, all township departments are operating under budget, resulting in carryover balances heading into next year.

While the 2026 budget is currently an estimate, trustees are waiting to see how tax collections and expenditures for the remainder of the year play out before finalizing next year's budget. Early projections suggest the township may be able to make a significant contribution to the fire department’s building fund.

“Now we have $1 million that is in our star savings account for the building fund that's and we are looking at extending that to $2 million for ‘26 so adding a million that, our target is $5 million. So, if we were capable of adding a million a year, we obviously would be on target to build in just a few years,” said Kevin Cooley, Shawnee Township Fiscal Officer.

Trustees also voted to place a renewal levy on the November ballot to support the police department. If approved, the five-year levy would cost property owners about $86 annually for every $100,000 in property valuation.
