WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — Division III regional semifinal action continued Friday night as Wapakoneta met Toledo Central Catholic for the first time ever on the football field.
The Redskins entered the matchup at a perfect 11–0, while the Fighting Irish brought a roster loaded with Division I recruits and a résumé that includes three straight state championship appearances and two titles.
Toledo Central Catholic struck first, but Wapakoneta quickly answered with a big play. Quarterback Caleb Moyer connected with Kaden Page for a 53-yard gain to the Irish 25-yard line. However, the Redskins came up empty after a missed field goal.
Special teams miscues proved costly for Wapak, as a muffed punt and a muffed kick return both turned into Irish touchdowns, stretching the deficit to 27–0.
Wapakoneta’s defense provided a spark when Ryan Richardson made a diving interception, but the offense again wasn’t able to convert.
Moyer finally broke through in the fourth quarter, finishing a 13:56 drive on a running clock with a touchdown run to put Wapak on the board.
Final score: Toledo Central Catholic 41, Wapakoneta 7.
The Redskins close their season at 11–1 and as Western Buckeye League champions.
