SPENCERVILLE, Ohio (WLIO) - It was Mental Health Awareness Day at Spencerville High School on Friday.

The goal was to help students decompress through a variety of fun activities as the school year winds to a close. Bounce houses were set up, students learned how to square dance, some were baking sweet treats, while others headed outside for a spirited game of gaga ball.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the events on Friday were designed to teach the kids about coping skills and how to find resources to help them handle stress and other issues they're dealing with.

"We really push our kids to do well here - academically, athletically, but also things can be hard for them at home, too, and they don't always have that extra support where they really need it," said Chelsea Schnipke, social worker at Spencerville High School. "So encouraging them to take breaks, encouraging them to talk to grown ups that they they trust and can connect with, can really help benefit you."

The Mental Health Awareness Day wrapped up with a trip out to the track for a fun run. Organizers hope to hold the event every year.
