LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - U.S. Rep. Mike Carey was the guest speaker at the Republicans’ luncheon Friday.
The congressman spoke to local Republicans about how he believes former President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office have gone.
Rep. Carey represents Ohio’s 15th Congressional District, which includes all of Madison County and parts of Clark, Franklin, Fayette, Miami and Shelby counties. He was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2021. The congressman spoke to local Republicans about how he believes former President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office have gone.
"I think he's done a lot over the first 100 days, but we got a lot more we have to do," said Rep. Carey. "I think the thing that we're working on in Congress right now is trying to make sure that his Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from 2017 is extended. If we do not extend it, the average taxpayer in the United States will see their taxes raised by 22%, so this is a big piece of legislation. Hopefully we'll have this done. We're looking at an update sometime in the week of the 12th."
This week, President Trump removed National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and announced he will nominate Waltz to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Rep. Carey shared his thoughts on the decision.
"I think it's a position change; I think if you look at the position that he's going into, quite frankly, I think it's a promotion," said Rep. Carey. "I think the President has all the confidence in Mike. I served with Mike in Congress, I think he's a great guy, great leader. I'm glad to see that he's going to remain and be promoted within the administration."
Rep. Carey’s current term in the House runs through January 2027.
