1/19/24 Update from ArtSpace/Lima's Facebook Page: Due to the weather and concern for safety, we are going to postpone the "River and Rust" poetry evening at ArtSpace. We will be rescheduling this event. Watch for the announcement on our website and Facebook page.
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A collection of native Lima writers and poets will be on display Friday night.
"River & Rust: A Night of Poetry" at ArtSpace/Lima, is an event open to the public tomorrow evening. The book titled "River and Rust" features poems from past and present residents of Allen County. They all have personal interpretations of what life is like here in Lima. The collection represents talented individuals from various races, ages, and backgrounds. The editor of the publication, Timothy Cheeseman, says he realizes the impact art and poetry have on us as humans and how the community has revitalized its importance here in Allen County.
"We exist in a time where there are some mechanisms like TikTok and Instagram which have produced new environments and new venues for poetry. I think we can see some of that in Lima with some of these. You know I'm not, I don't think poetry answers questions. Poetry didn't save my life, but I think Keats and Sexton and Ginsburg ask the essential, beautiful questions. Poetry is humanity's original language. Shakespeare, the charms that guide us through childhood are all verse. So while poetry didn't save my life, the community that grows around it and the community that exists with it I think is really important," said Timothy Cheeseman, "River and Rust editor and Lima Poet Laureate.
Cheeseman says attendees at the event can expect to hear poetry that conveys the voice of Lima from both the best and the roughest parts of life with great local performers.
The event is free and open to the public. "River & Rust: A Night of Poetry" will be on January 19, 2024 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at ArtSpace/Lima, located at 65 Town Square Lima, Ohio 45801. You can find the book "River and Rust" on Amazon by clicking here.
